I used to think spywares were tall tales weaved with a conspiracy theory flavor. Never would I think that they were actually more than tales of fiction. The said part is, I had to find out the hard way. Yep, you guessed it! I got infected.

What happened was, I suddenly noticed my Internet connection suddenly slow down. At first I thought it must be the server or something. And it was definitely the something because a couple of days later, not only was my connection still slow I was getting pop-ups every couple of second. I checked my pop-up blocker & saw that though it was fully activated it didn’t seem to be working. Then my homepage got jacked. That was when I decided that I had to get some help.

Help came in the form of my best bud who was some sort of a computer whiz & who is undoubtedly a lot more open minded than me. He told me that I have just contracted a deadly disease. I told him his tone gave me the creeps & that its only a software, its not like I have terminal cancer. He said, what was in my computer system is the computer version of cancer. Then he said the dreadful words — “You have spyware.”

My mind went blank after that. I knew spywares were vindictive little pests that boroughs into the hard drive and eats up as much information as it can. Then it dawned on me that spywares are real & it’s a formidable foe. So I asked my friend what I should do. He said. “Easy. Get a spyware removal” So not knowing what else to do, I went online & looked up spyware removal software. Despite my super slow connection, it did not take me long to find out that spyware removal is a little bit beyond my budget range.

Q: What is spyware?

A: Webopedia’s definition of Spyware is as follows: Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user’s Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet; however, it should be noted that the majority of shareware and freeware applications do not come with spyware. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about your e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers. For a complete report visit http://www.virus.ca

Q: How does spyware get into my computer?

A. Spyware often arrives via an automatic download from a website you are surfing. If you download freeware or shareware software, spyware can be embedded in the installation process. Spyware can also download on to your computer through email attachments.

Q: What is a cookie?

A: They small files or are pieces of information that are placed in your web browser to track web habits. Cookies are often useful; because a web site can track that you have visited it before and let you enter the site without a registration process. Cookies are also used to keep track of your progress through a web store. They are also used to customize website ads to your likes and dislikes. Some cookies can be considered spyware.

Q: How do I know if my computer has spyware?

A: Typical symptoms of spyware include a slower computer than normal. If your computer suddenly starts to run really slow, when it never used to, then it may be infected with spyware. Spyware often hogs system resources including the memory and hard disk space, so your computer slows down. Another symptom is if you get popups on sites where you didn’t get them before. To find out, do a Google search. If you get a pop up then you probably have adware or spyware because Google does not have popups. Another symptom is when your web browser’s homepage is hijacked when you go online. If your browser is suddenly redirected to a strange website, it’s most likely spyware.

Q. Why is spyware considered dangerous?

A. Spyware can compromise your privacy and provide others with information about you and your computer habits without your knowledge. Keylogger spyware can capture your

keystrokes and send it to a third party. This could expose your user IDs and passwords to thieves. Other spyware include trojans which allow someone to log into your computer

remotely and use it to send spam or launch malicious attacks on other computers on the

Internet, making it look like you are at fault.

Q: What is a “jacker” or a “switcher?”

A: These are slang terms for Hijackers, or applications that will change your browser home page, your default search engine and even redirect you away from websites you try to reach. Though the term hijacker sounds like one person is behind it all, today, there are many scams involving Browser hijackers, which are malicious programs.

These programs can also produce pop-up ads for pornography, add bookmarks to Internet Explorer’s Favorites folder, and can even redirect users to porn websites when they mistype URLs.

Q: What’s the difference between Adware and Spyware?

A: Adware is an application that pops up advertisement banners or windows at random.

Adware can also be seen on your browser content in what is known as pop-ups. Spyware gathers information about your computing habits.

Q: I have a spyware remover program but I don’t think it has removed a specific spyware program on my computer. What should I do?

A. Just like your anti-virus program, you need to update the spyware signature files in your anti-spyware program so that it will catch new spyware programs. If you already have antispyware software, go into your spyware program and see if it has a method to update these files. Q: Is there a way that I can delete spyware manually?

Typically these viruses log user activity and present a high risk of data and system damage. These types of threats are difficult to contain and extremely difficult to remove. They often use unauthorized, invisible installation, and in addition to logging keyboard activity and taking system snapshots, these Very High risk viruses have the ability to disable anti-virus and anti-virus firewall programs, open communication ports, and send confidential user data to remote servers.

Q: How do I know CyberDefender Antispyware 2006 is working?

A: To verify whether your CyberDefender program is working please look at the bottom right hand side of your computer screen. In the icon tray you should find the CyberDefender icon which is a blue circle with the alphabet C inscribed inside it. If you do not find this in the icon tray look for it on the Desktop and double click on it to start the program. If you do not see it on the desktop or in the icon tray then you don’t have the program installed. Please proceed to www.cyberdefender.com to download and install the program.

Q. Is there anything I can do to stop spyware?

A. To protect your computer from spyware, don’t download programs by companies you are not familiar with. Don’t download illegal pirated software. Avoid shareware and freeware. Set your browser security to HIGH. Use CyberDefender’s Internet Security Toolbar by visiting http://www.virus.ca/anti-spyware-download.asp Its Safe Search feature will protect you when surfing the Internet. Last, on your Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > then the Security tab and move the slider to MEDIUM or preferably HIGH. But know that you may block access to some websites you want to see. Ultimately your best bet is to get an anti-spyware program and scan your system regularly.

Spyware is never a good thing to have on your computer. Most Spyware programs get installed on your computer without your knowledge and they collect information about were you go on the internet and even what you type in. The most annoying part of spyware is the pop-ups. Often times these can be very offensive. Many of the pop-ups you will see will say something like “Your computer is infected download this program now”. What they are trying to do is sell you a fix to the problem they gave. Spy Sheriff is one such program. Besides your identity being at risk spyware will slow your computer way down and your productivity and sanity will suffer.

Most people know they need an anti-spyware program but which ones work best. The following 4 programs are free ones that work. These programs while good do not really in my opinion give you the best security. I also recommend purchasing a program but for free versions these take the cake.

Avast Home Edition

Avast has both an anti-virus and anti-spyware program. Avast is simple to use and does a good job preventing spyware from infecting your computer. If you are already infected it will remove most of the spyware on your computer but chances are it will not get it all. For a free version I would say it works very well.

AVG Anti-Spyware

I personally like AVG anti-spyware. Like Avast, AVG has a spyware and virus suit in two different packages that are free. The free version will actively run on your computer and remove most spyware. It does a great job of preventing spyware in the first place but lacks in the removal department. Again for a free based program this one is one of the leading on the markets.

Spybot S&D

Spybot search and destroy has been a leader for many years when it comes to spyware removal. The newest version has something called tea timer that actively runs on your computer and blocks most spyware programs for getting in. They also have an immunization database that will block known bad sites. The program itself does an excellent job removing spyware and all in all is my favorite free spyware program because of how well it works and stability.

Ad-Aware

Ad-aware is another great program and works well with Spybot. The newest version does a great job scanning and removing spyware. The one down side is in the latest release it seems to bug you to upgrade and purchase the program. I find this a little annoying. Ad-aware will not do an active scan unless your purchase the program.

You can only choose the best spyware removal program for you and your computer network depending on your own particular needs so make sure that you determine how serious your spyware problem is before making any final decisions here.

Today’s online landscape can prove a hazard-strewn adventure, laden with the pitfalls of email scam attempts, computer viruses, and those sneaky little programs known as ‘Spyware’ which monitor your computer activities and can potentially steal bank account numbers, site passwords, and produce the tragic identity theft cases one reads about in the news. The most conscientious computer user can fall prey to such attacks merely by having an online presence. Therefore, it is crucial that you know how to defend yourself against these insidious intrusions.

There are plenty of free resources available online that you can use to defend yourself against the aforementioned Spyware. Some of the most popular programs for preventing the abuses of these evil little online demons are made freely available to the global community.

Two of the most popular programs, which I have used for years, are Spybot: Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware. While both programs will scan for Spyware (and remove it – unlike some seemingly ‘free’ Spyware removal programs), Spybot is particularly valuable for its powerful firewall which requires your permission whenever programs try to change your registries or settings.

Along with those award-winning programs is another program for the more advanced user which I have also found useful, HiJackThis. HiJackThis allows you to see the programs that have the most influence over your computer and instantly delete them. For more entirely free programs relating to Spyware (or anything else, for that matter), I recommend checking the section at NoNags.com, which maintains an excellent collection of all things free, or PCWorld.com, which provides up-to-date and useful reviews on Spyware and other security software.

In order to keep up the productivity, the employers have spyware programs installed in the computer system so that the tasks and the required assignments could be easily administered. Spyware would be a good assistance in such circumstances.

3. Child monitoring

Child monitoring is another reason for having a spyware program. To ensure that the young mind does not get corrupted, parents need to ensure the safety by having this software installed. Spyware software is also used for spousal monitoring. Spousal monitoring is supposed to be illegal in few states and is considered to be a malicious activity. Hence, the use of such software is held back often.

No matter what the reason is, you should make sure that you pay due attention have enough research done before you go about downloading any freely available anti spyware programs from the internet.
